Phone Speaker or Microphone Not Working? Here's Why

Audio problems are among the most disruptive phone issues you can have. Whether you cannot hear the person on the other end of a call, your speakerphone sounds like it is underwater, or people keep telling you that you sound muffled — these problems have specific causes and specific fixes.

Here is how to figure out what is going on.

Most smartphones have multiple audio components:

• Earpiece speaker: The small speaker at the top of the phone used for phone calls
• Loudspeaker: The bottom-facing speaker used for speakerphone, music, and notifications
• Main microphone: Usually at the bottom of the phone, used for calls and voice recording
• Secondary microphone: Often at the top, used for noise cancellation and video recording
• Front microphone: On some phones, used during video calls

When you have an audio problem, identifying which component is affected helps narrow down the cause.

If you cannot hear the other person during a regular phone call but speakerphone works fine, the earpiece speaker is the issue.

Check first: Make sure your volume is turned up during a call (use the volume buttons while on a call). Also check that nothing is blocking the earpiece — some cases cover it partially.

Common causes: Lint and debris blocking the earpiece grille, physical damage from a drop, or water damage.

If speakerphone sounds distorted, muffled, or has no sound, the loudspeaker is affected.

Check first: Shine a light at the speaker grille at the bottom of your phone. Lint and debris are extremely common here and can muffle sound significantly. Use a soft brush or compressed air to clean it gently.

Common causes: Blocked speaker grille (very common), physical damage, or water damage.

If neither the earpiece nor the loudspeaker works, the issue may be software-related or involve a component that affects both (such as the audio IC chip on the logic board).

Try first: Restart your phone. Check that your phone is not stuck in headphone mode (sometimes happens after water exposure — the phone thinks headphones are plugged in and routes audio there instead).

Microphone issues are often reported by the other person on the call rather than by you — "you sound muffled," "I can barely hear you," or "there is a lot of background noise."

Open the Voice Memos app (iPhone) or a voice recorder app (Android) and record yourself speaking. Play it back. If you sound clear in the recording, the microphone hardware is likely fine and the issue may be with a specific app or call quality.

If the recording sounds muffled or distorted, the microphone has a problem.

Blocked microphone: The microphone is a tiny hole, usually at the bottom of the phone. Lint, debris, or a poorly fitting case can block it. Check that your case is not covering the microphone hole.

Water damage: Even brief water exposure can cause microphone problems. Corrosion on the microphone contacts is a common result.

Physical damage: Drops can damage the microphone module or its connection to the logic board.

Software issue: Rarely, a software bug can affect microphone function. Try restarting and updating your OS.

This is a surprisingly common issue: your phone gets stuck thinking headphones are plugged in, so it routes audio to a non-existent headphone jack instead of the speakers.

Signs: No sound from speakers, but audio works with headphones. May show a headphone icon in the status bar.

Causes: Water or debris in the headphone jack (on phones that still have one), or a software glitch.

Fix: Try plugging in and unplugging headphones several times. Clean the headphone jack if present. Restart the phone. If it persists, bring it in.
