iPhone Camera Not Working? Here's What to Check First

Your iPhone camera is one of its most-used features — and one of the most frustrating things to have fail. Whether you are getting a black screen, blurry images, or a camera app that simply will not open, there are several possible causes ranging from simple software glitches to physical damage.

Here is how to diagnose the problem and figure out your next step.

Before assuming hardware damage, try these software-level fixes:

Swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or double-press the home button on older iPhones) to see your open apps. Swipe the Camera app up to close it completely. Then reopen it.

A full restart clears temporary software issues. Hold the side button and a volume button until the power slider appears, then slide to power off. Wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on.

Go to Settings → General → Software Update. An outdated iOS version can cause camera app instability. Install any available updates.

If the above steps do not work, try Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings. This resets system settings without deleting your data. It can resolve camera configuration issues.

Software cause: The camera app is frozen or has a permissions issue. Force close and restart usually fixes this.

Hardware cause: The camera module is physically damaged — often from a drop. If the black screen persists after a restart, this is likely a hardware issue.

Software cause: Rare, but a software bug can occasionally affect image processing.

Hardware cause: The most common cause is a damaged optical image stabilization (OIS) system. The OIS uses a tiny motor to stabilize the lens — if this is damaged (usually from a drop), the camera cannot focus properly. You may also hear a rattling sound when you shake the phone.

If you hear or feel a rattle when you move your phone, the OIS mechanism is likely damaged. This is a hardware repair.

The front camera (selfie camera) is a separate module from the rear camera. If only the front camera is affected, the issue is isolated to that component.

Note: On iPhone models with Face ID, the front camera assembly also includes the Face ID sensors. Damage to this area can affect both the camera and Face ID.

The flash is a separate component from the camera. If your flash does not work but the camera does, the issue may be with the flash module or its connection.

Try Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera to ensure the Camera app has permission. Also check that the flash is not set to "Off" in the camera app itself.

This is almost always a software issue. Try the restart and update steps above. If it persists, a factory reset (after backing up your data) usually resolves it.
