How to Back Up Your Phone Before a Repair (Step by Step)

One of the first things we tell every customer: back up your phone before you bring it in.

Most repairs do not affect your data. But some do — particularly water damage treatment, logic board repairs, and any repair that requires a factory reset. And in rare cases, unexpected complications can arise.

A backup takes less than 10 minutes and protects everything: photos, contacts, messages, app data, and settings. Here is exactly how to do it.

You have two options: iCloud backup (wireless, automatic) or computer backup (local, more complete).

Requirements: Enough iCloud storage (free tier is 5GB — may need to upgrade to 50GB for $0.99/month), connected to Wi-Fi.

1. Open Settings
2. Tap your name at the top
3. Tap iCloud
4. Tap iCloud Backup
5. Make sure Back Up This iPhone is toggled on
6. Tap Back Up Now
7. Stay connected to Wi-Fi until the backup completes

You will see the date and time of the last successful backup at the bottom of this screen. Make sure it shows today's date before bringing your phone in.

What iCloud backs up: Photos, contacts, messages, app data, settings, health data, and more. It does not back up music purchased elsewhere or some third-party app data.

A computer backup is more complete than iCloud and does not require iCloud storage.

On Mac (macOS Catalina or later):

1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac with a cable
2. Open Finder
3. Click your iPhone in the sidebar
4. Click Back Up Now
5. Check Encrypt local backup if you want to include passwords and health data
6. Wait for the backup to complete

On Windows (or older Mac):

1. Install iTunes if you have not already
2. Connect your iPhone
3. Click the iPhone icon in iTunes
4. Click Back Up Now
5. Wait for completion

Android backup options vary slightly by manufacturer, but Google's built-in backup covers the essentials.

1. Open Settings
2. Search for "Backup" or navigate to System → Backup
3. Make sure Back up to Google Drive is enabled
4. Tap Back up now
5. Wait for the backup to complete

What Google backs up: Contacts, calendar events, app data, call history, SMS messages, settings, and Wi-Fi passwords.

What it does NOT back up: Photos and videos (use Google Photos for those — see below).

Google Photos backs up your photos and videos separately from the system backup.

1. Open the Google Photos app
2. Tap your profile picture in the top right
3. Tap Photos settings
4. Tap Backup
5. Make sure Backup is turned on
6. Tap Back up device storage to back up existing photos

Google Photos offers free storage at "Storage saver" quality, or you can pay for Google One storage to keep original quality.

Samsung Galaxy phones have an additional backup option through Samsung Cloud:

1. Open Settings
2. Tap Accounts and backup
3. Tap Back up data under Samsung Cloud
4. Select what to back up
5. Tap Back up now

Samsung Cloud backs up items that Google backup may miss, including Samsung-specific app data.

If your phone is not turning on and you need a backup before repair, bring it in as-is. We can often recover data from phones that will not power on — it is one of the services we offer.

Do not attempt to force a non-functional phone to turn on repeatedly. This can sometimes cause additional damage.

Once your phone is repaired and returned to you, restoring your backup is straightforward:

iPhone: During initial setup, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" or connect to your computer and restore from the local backup.

Android: Sign in to your Google account during setup and choose to restore from backup. Most of your apps and data will be restored automatically.

Do not wait until you need a repair to think about backup. Set up automatic backups so your data is always protected:

• iPhone: Enable iCloud Backup and it runs automatically every night when your phone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi
• Android: Google Backup runs automatically in the background
• Photos: Enable Google Photos or iCloud Photos for automatic photo backup

A phone can be repaired or replaced. Your photos, contacts, and memories cannot.
